Read the Model Code First

Mack is the only major truck marque whose model names are still mostly letter codes, and those letters are the most useful thing on the truck when you are ordering cooling parts. They tell you what the chassis was built to do, and that — not the year — decides the size and shape of the cooling package.

Across the 86 Mack parts we stock, the codes fall into three groups:

  • Highway tractors — CH, CHN, CHU, CL, CX, CXN, CXP, and the named generations that replaced them: Anthem and Pinnacle. Long-haul duty, ram air doing most of the cooling work, and a package sized for sustained highway load.
  • Vocational — RD, DM, RW, GU, CV, CT, and the Granite range. Dump, mixer and heavy-haul. Constant low-speed, high-load running, which is the hardest case for any cooling system because there is little ram air and the fan does all the work.
  • Refuse — MR, MRU, LE, LEU. Stop-start all day, often with a low-mounted cooling package, and a debris environment in a class of its own.

Note the spread in that table: a Titan's core is nearly twice the height of a Vision's. Ordering on the word "Mack" alone is how people end up with a radiator that will not go in the hole. Six Common Mack Cooling and A/C Faults

1 Radiator leaks and core blockage

The tank-to-core crimp is the usual leak point and it weeps rather than bursts, so it shows first as a reservoir level that keeps falling with nothing on the ground. Internally, scale from tired coolant narrows the tubes and costs capacity long before anything leaks. On vocational and refuse chassis the external problem is worse: the core packs with debris far faster than a highway truck's.

2 Coolant reservoir and surge tank cracks

Pressurised plastic that heat-cycles thousands of times. Cracks start at moulding seams and around the neck, and a seam that only opens hot and under pressure will pass a cold inspection while losing coolant every day. A tank needing a weekly top-up with no puddle is the classic sign.

3 Charge air cooler leaks

Power loss under load, black smoke, rising exhaust temperature and worse fuel economy — none of which point obviously at the cooler, so trucks get diagnosed for turbo or injector faults first. 4 A/C line and hose leaks

The most searched Mack A/C problem we see, and on a vocational or refuse chassis it makes sense: lines are routed through a harder vibration environment than on a highway tractor, and a chafed or work-hardened hose leaks slowly enough that the system just gets less cold each week. Inspect the full run, not only the ends.

5 A/C compressor failure

Warm air, a clutch that will not engage, or a noise that changes with engine speed. Compressors rarely fail alone — low refrigerant from an untraced leak starves the compressor of oil and destroys it. Replacing the compressor without finding the leak buys a season at most.

6 O-ring and seal leaks

The cheapest failure and the one we are asked about most. Every joint in an A/C system is sealed by an o-ring; they harden with age and heat, and a hardened one leaks slowly rather than failing outright. Replace every o-ring you disturb, match the compound to the refrigerant, and lubricate with the specified A/C oil rather than whatever is on the bench.

The A/C Loop: Lines, O-Rings and Switches

More people search for Mack A/C parts than Mack cooling parts, and the A/C side is where a repair most often has to be done twice. Four omissions account for nearly all of it:

  • Not finding the leak first. A system that lost its charge lost it somewhere. Dye or an electronic sniffer, then fix the leak, then charge — in that order.
  • Reusing o-rings. A used o-ring has taken a set. It will seal on the bench and weep in service. They cost almost nothing; replace every one you disturb.
  • Skipping the receiver drier. Its desiccant saturates the moment the system is opened to atmosphere, and the moisture it releases back forms acid that attacks the new compressor. It is the cheapest part in the job and the most commonly skipped.
  • A short vacuum. Moisture left in the system does the same damage as a saturated drier. A brief pull-down is not a vacuum.

The pressure switch is worth checking before condemning anything expensive: a switch that has failed will stop the compressor engaging and present exactly like a dead compressor, for a fraction of the cost.

Problems by Mack Model

Anthem (2017–present)

Mack's current highway flagship, MP7 or MP8. A modern aero nose means the charge air cooler, radiator and A/C condenser sit close together, so debris between the coolers matters more than on the older CH and CL generations. Clean between the stack, not just the front face.

Pinnacle (2007–present)

The long-running highway tractor the Anthem sits above. Widely enough used that both original and aftermarket cooling parts are well supplied.

Granite and GU (vocational)

Dump, mixer and construction work. Sustained low-speed, high-load operation is the worst case for a cooling system, and vibration is far harder on A/C lines and tank seams than highway duty. On a Granite running hot in the yard but fine on the road, check the fan clutch first — at low speed the fan is doing all the cooling.

CH, CL, CX and Vision

The highway generations that preceded the Pinnacle and Anthem. Old enough now that original radiators and coolers are reaching the end of their service life, and well represented in our stock.

RD, DM and R model

The classic vocational chassis, some of them still working decades on. Because the same code covers an enormous span of years and specifications, the year alone is a poor guide — the core dimensions and the inlet and outlet positions decide fitment.

MR, MRU, LE and LEU (refuse)

Refuse chassis, and a genuinely different cooling problem: stop-start duty all day, minimal ram air, and a debris environment that will pack a core faster than anything else on the road. We stock these too — they are not an afterthought, and cleaning intervals on them should be far shorter than on a highway truck.

Diagnosing Overheating and Weak A/C — Step by Step

  1. Look at the front of the truck first. Most heat complaints are airflow, not components. Check the whole stack — condenser, charge air cooler, radiator — for packing. On a refuse or vocational chassis, check it more often than you think you need to.
  2. Check coolant level and condition. A dropping level with no puddle points at the surge tank or a weeping tank crimp. Brown or oily coolant is a separate and more serious problem.
  3. Note when it happens. Hot at low speed but fine on the highway points at the fan or fan clutch. Hot at highway speed points at flow or capacity: a blocked core, a failing water pump, a thermostat.
  4. Boost-test the charge air cooler if there is any power complaint at all, before touching the turbo.
  5. For weak A/C, measure both pressures. High side and low side together tell you whether you have a charge problem, a restriction or a failing compressor. One reading tells you almost nothing.
  6. Check the pressure switch before condemning a compressor that will not engage.

What do the letters in a Mack model name mean?

Why is my Mack Granite hot in the yard but fine on the highway?

Almost always the fan or fan clutch. At road speed ram air does most of the cooling; at low speed the fan has to do it all, so a clutch that is not engaging or is slipping shows up only when the truck slows. Vocational trucks spend their lives in exactly that condition. A packed radiator face gives the same pattern, so check airflow first — it costs nothing.

Do I need to replace the receiver drier when I replace the A/C compressor?

Yes. The drier's desiccant saturates as soon as the system is opened to atmosphere, and the moisture it releases back into a repaired system forms acid that attacks the new compressor. It is the cheapest part in the repair and skipping it is the most common reason an A/C job fails within a season.

How long should a Mack radiator last?

Coolant maintenance matters far more than mileage, and duty cycle matters more than either. A flushed system on the correct coolant will outlast one topped up with whatever is to hand by a wide margin, because it is scale and corrosion — not wear — that ends most radiators. A vocational or refuse chassis also loads the cooling system far harder than a highway tractor, so the same part will not last as long on a Granite as on a Pinnacle.
