Semi Truck Coolant Reservoir Tanks — OEM Replacement Overflow & Surge Tanks

The coolant reservoir tank holds excess coolant as the engine heats up and allows it to return to the system as the engine cools. A cracked or leaking tank causes coolant loss, low coolant warnings, and eventually overheating. It is an inexpensive part that is often overlooked until the engine is at risk of serious damage.

At True Truck Parts, we carry OEM-spec coolant reservoir tanks for Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Volvo, Mack, International, and Western Star. Serving fleets in Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Milton, Oakville, Burlington, and across the GTA. Same-day quoting, Canada-wide delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions — Coolant Reservoir Tanks

What are the signs of a failing coolant reservoir tank on a semi truck?

Signs include a low coolant warning light, visible cracks or discoloration on the tank body, coolant residue or staining around the tank or cap, the overflow tube dripping coolant when the system is not overheating, or the coolant level dropping consistently without an obvious external leak elsewhere in the cooling system.

Can a cracked coolant tank be repaired?

Plastic coolant tanks can sometimes be repaired with epoxy or plastic welding for minor cracks, but this is a temporary fix. Under the heat and pressure cycling of a heavy-duty diesel engine, repaired tanks tend to re-crack at the same point. Replacement is the proper long-term solution and the tank cost is low relative to the risk of engine damage from overheating.

Does the coolant reservoir tank affect engine temperature?

Yes. If the tank is cracked or the cap seal is failing, the cooling system cannot maintain proper pressure, which lowers the boiling point of the coolant. Loss of pressure increases the risk of coolant boiling and steam pockets forming, especially under load or in hot weather. This directly increases the risk of overheating and head gasket damage.
