Semi Truck A/C Evaporators — OEM-Spec Cab Cooling Replacement Cores

The evaporator is the component inside the cab that produces cold air. Refrigerant expands and absorbs heat as it passes through the evaporator core, cooling the air blown across it by the blower motor. Evaporators fail due to corrosion from moisture and road salt, physical damage, or refrigerant leaks from micro-cracks in the aluminum core. A leaking evaporator is typically diagnosed by a sweet refrigerant smell inside the cab and gradual loss of cooling performance.

Evaporator replacement is more involved than other A/C components because it is located inside the dash or HVAC box. At True Truck Parts, we carry OEM-spec evaporator cores for major semi truck makes. Serving Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Milton, Oakville, Burlington, and across the GTA. Same-day quoting, Canada-wide delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions — A/C Evaporators

How do I know if my semi truck evaporator is leaking?

Signs include a sweet chemical smell inside the cab (refrigerant odor), an oily film on the inside of the windshield, A/C cooling performance gradually declining over weeks, or refrigerant dye visible inside the HVAC box under UV light. Evaporator leaks are slow and often mistaken for other A/C issues — a UV dye test is the most reliable diagnostic method.

Can a leaking evaporator be repaired?

Evaporator core leaks are generally not repairable due to their location and the small size of the leak points. The core must be replaced. Stop-leak products are not recommended — they can clog the expansion valve orifice and damage the compressor, turning a minor repair into a much larger one.

Is evaporator replacement a big job on a semi truck?

Yes — the evaporator is located inside the HVAC housing, which typically requires removing dash panels or the HVAC box to access. It is a 4–8 hour job depending on the truck model. The system must be evacuated, the evaporator replaced, then recharged and leak-tested. Always replace the receiver-dryer at the same time since the system will be opened.
